Earthquakes = Funny Radio: 7/29/08 Set List and More

I didn't do a show last week as I was in Seattle visiting family. Music-related highlights included: The Capitol Hill Block Party and spontaneous bowling with George from Terrorbird, Mona from Sub Pop and Megan from KUSF; the books attached to headphones at the Geoff McFettridge installation near the Seattle Art Museum's Sculpture Garden; a visit to the EMPSFM in which I actually took in the exhibits and played with pedals and a sampler; Janet Cardiff's 40 Part Motet installation at the Tacoma Art Museum; and reading more of The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross.

It was cool to come back to KSCR and find in the mail a signed poster from No Age, promo goodies from Dr. Dog (let me know if you'd like tix to their 8/8 show in LA), the new Sebastien Tellier and the arrival at last of this summer's albums by The Silver Jews and The Dutchess & The Duke.

Towards the end of my show this week, as I began to interview guest Marion Hodges, there was a sizable earthquake and luckily for all, I left Karl Hector & the Malcouns on continuous play as we left the building and hung out for a bit before deciding things seemed alright enough to head back. I'm glad things were alright for just about everybody in SoCal despite the size of the quake. Sandra told me she listened to my show under her desk while the house shook.

Marion came by, excited to announce the upcoming monthly club night Hungry Beat that will be taking place at Pehrspace starting in September. Go add them as a friend on MySpace.

Three local shows I'd like to promote are:

Hearts of Palm UK
@ Spaceland 7/30/08, opening for The Virgins & Friendly Fires

Low End Theory @ The Airliner 7/30/08 - Thavius Beck, Ras G, Take, Computer Jay (See below for more info)

Nomo @ Spaceland Sunday 8/03/08

More on the beat spectacular at Low End tonight:

On Wednesday, July 30th, Low End Theory is back to the beats, highlighting some of the brightest stars from the L.A. beat scene. First off we have birthday boy and general monolith Thavius Beck, who will be debuting a slew of his newest beat creations. We will also feature sets by Poo-Bah mainstays Ras G and Take, plus your favorite Atari twiddler Computer Jay. Truly, this line-up exemplifies what Low End Theory is about. All residents on deck (yes, D-Styles is back from Hong Kong). We're also back inside this week, so early arrival is highly suggested for this special event:

THAVIUS BECK
[Lab Waste]
He started as a saxophonist/bassist with a sampler, who later morphed into the beatmaking behemoth that sits before your monitor. Ten years, two groups, and ten solo records later (as well as production for Saul Williams, Busdriver, Subtitle, various film scores and remixes), and Thavius Beck has become de rigeur listening for electronic music fans worldwide. Happy birthday holmes!

RAS G
[The Afrikan Space Program]
With a handful of records, some blunts and an MPC, this L.A. producer has been making beats for five years now and has released a handful of EPs on the Poo-Bah label. With dub heavy bass and dusty synth beats, Ras G is a Low End favorite and we can't wait for him to bring the noise.

TAKE
[Poo-Bah]
Take makes music that makes love. His intricate melodies are hugged by warm bass shaking tingling textures from kissing trees. He is foraging a brand of deeply listenable instrumental hip-hop. Hypnotic, psychedelic, laidback -- in other words, thoroughly West Coast.

COMPUTER JAY
[Version 2.0]
Computer Jay was born in the late 70s with some complications. Fortunately It was a time when technology was being developed at an expediant rate, and several experiments were taking place on infants. The result: the beat maestro/cyborg known as Computer Jay. It's on like Tron!
